Brakemen are a Security Force on board Snowpiercer. They are known to act similarly to an old-world police force. Brakemen act like detectives and solve various crimes aboard Snowpiercer, as they are the only known force aboard with the authority to make lawful arrests. The Brakemen display seniority to Jackboots who carry out their orders[1].
Uniforms, Equipment and Organisation[edit | edit source]
Brakemen are seen donning blue suits with white shirts, black ties and blue under-suit vest with blue pants. Accessories to this include their patrol belt (withholding their baton and other equipment in pouches), silver bar insignias on their collars (that of a Second Lieutenant in many armies pre-freeze), shoulder epaulettes sporting a number of 0-3 lines to signify rank and seniority, and ribbons / medals worn on the chest (only seen on Lead Brakeman Roche). These suits are done up with custom Wilford (W branded) buttons.
Brakemen have three types of batons in their arsenal, including an extendable ESP baton, a thick nightstick baton and a collapsible spear baton with a sharp tip for lethal use. This is opposed to the Jackboots who carry axes, spears and one single type of nightstick baton on their back. Brakemen are also seen to use small circular riot shields, similarly to the Jackboots, however this is only done in various extreme emergencies.
The Brakemen are estimated to have somewhere around over 200 personnel, as Jackboots are known to number around 160, and it is stated that there are over 400 total security forces onboard the train in Season 1. We know that these Brakemen are organised by certain different ranks or levels of seniority shown via their shoulder epaulette insignia. From watching how Brakemen of different ranks act, it can be assumed that 0 epaulette lines signifies a Brakemen of junior or low-level rank, 1 epaulette lines signifies a more senior Brakeman who gives orders to those with 0, 2 epaulette lines signifies a very senior Brakeman that leads squads of lesser Brakemen, and 3 epaulette lines signifies the Lead Brakeman.
