994 Cars Long is the tenth and final episode of the first season of Snowpiercer. It is the tenth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis
In the revolution's aftermath, Layton struggles to govern the shell-shocked survivors. Melanie finally makes peace with her demons, only to realize the biggest threat to their survival is right over her shoulder.
Plot
Melanie makes an announcement over the PA of Snowpiercer in which she officially relinquishes control of the train to Layton and explains that she is deeply sorry for all of the choices that she made. Moments later, she is seen in the Engine, wherein she tells Bennett that she has one more thing to do before returning to her job as engineer and locking herself up in the Engine.
Layton and Miles talk and Layton reveals to Miles that they lost numerous Tailies in the revolution, including Josie; both Miles and Layton are upset about this, but Layton tells him that they should stick together in order to get through the hard times ahead.
Addressing the train, Layton tells the passengers that the Brakemen and rebel army are in charge until they can elect a representative government to govern; he makes it clear that the train is owned by the passengers moving forward, however, and not by a dictatorship. Ruth is angry at Layton’s comments and expresses the thought that things will fall apart on Snowpiercer without order — Layton tells her that the passengers want to see change, not order. Roche tries to convince Ruth to show Layton support from Hospitality, however, Ruth admits that she has lost faith that Hospitality can keep the train in order.
LJ arrives in her carriage to find Pike has assumed control and is running a pseudo-brothel and party house; Terrence is present. LJ pleads with Pike to leave, but he laughs, citing the carriage is his now and throws her out of the door where she begins to cry.
In the Engine Room, Javi questions the signal being received on the comms backup. Bennett explains that it is AGSEC wireless, but Javi is reluctant to believe it citing that he was under the impression they stopped numerous years earlier. With this, Bennett becomes increasingly visibly worried when he notices something on the screen, but hides it from Javi.
Melanie visits the Nightcar in an attempt to find solace with Miss Audrey. Inside, she and Audrey talk about Melanie’s feelings and her deepest regrets, although it becomes clear that Melanie regrets the things she did to stay In power, her greatest regret is leaving her daughter behind in the Freeze before boarding Snowpiercer. Melanie breaks down in front of Audrey and is consoled by the latter.
Meanwhile, Roche and Bess examine the damage to the ag-Sec carts with Jinju. There is tension, which escalates when Bess explains that each citizen aboard Snowpiercer will be fed the same amount of calories regardless of class. This sparks an argument between Jinju and Bess, with the latter questioning why Jinju never told her about Melanie’s secret; eventually, the two agree that the train comes first regardless, and with the inclination that the two cannot be together on opposite teams, the two officially end their relationship.
Melanie arrives at the Hospitality office to relinquish command to Ruth. Ruth has no time for her, however, and rebukes her for abandoning 147 people and leaving them to die. Nevertheless, Melanie tries to connect with Ruth and tells her that she now realises she was wrong about love, and it is the most important thing of all. With this, Melanie leaves for the Engine. In the Engine, Javi tells her about the signal they’re receiving and Melanie believes it to be survivors. Despite their advanced technology, they are unable to pinpoint what the signal is, but Bennett suggests they slow the train to keep in range. Melanie agrees, but remarks that they should confer with Layton given he is now in command.
Layton is dealing with an issue with looting downtrain when he is called to the Engine by Bennett. He arrives, and Melanie explains that there could be survivors and they either slow to check out the signal — putting them in a further energy deficit — or speed up, possibly missing the signal for another entire revolution. Layton decides that they should slow in an effort to save the survivors if they’re out there. Slowing, they notice that the signal is coming from another train branded with the Wilford Industries logo; this confuses Layton, but Javi quickly explains that it is a prototype Engine, Big Alice. Melanie is quick to explain that it could only be Wilford aboard, which worries Layton who is warned by Bennett that Big Alice will switch tracks at the next junction and join Snowpiercer. Layton leaves the Engine to gather troops to prepare for a possible boarding by Wilford.
In First, people quickly become aware of Big Alice approaching and seek answers from Ruth, who makes them aware that Wilford is back. Despite the confirmation from Ruth, people question how it is possible, and she remarks that if anyone could survive the Freeze it would be him. With this, Ruth organizes a welcome party for Wilford and announces that they’re heading for the Tail.
Back in the Engine, Bennett warns Melanie that Big Alice is going to catch them despite them advancing to full speed given her small size. With this, Melanie orders they maintain full speed and hope Snowpiercer can hold the distance. Snowpiercer is unable to hold its distance, however, and Big Alice catches them, locking on at the Tail. Moments later, Big Alice begins uplink with Snowpiercer and Javi fears that they will be locked out of the system should Wilford succeed; Melanie decides the only way to save them is to cut the feed by hand.
At the Tail, Layton gathers soldiers and Brakemen to greet Wilford, but is shocked when Ruth arrives with her welcome party. Layton tries to shut her down, but Ruth pulls a gun on her, citing that she is the welcome party. Layton is able to convince her that they will greet Wilford together with open arms, and this is enough for Ruth to put down her weapon.
Melanie and Bennett gather supplies to cut the uplink feed, and Bennett suggests they should let Wilford board as he has supplies Snowpiercer needs to survive. Melanie realises that Bennett knew about Big Alice all along, and questions Bennett about this who confirms her suspicions. With this, Melanie cuts Bennett’s oxygen supply rendering him unable to leave the train with her, remarking that she will not put her faith in Wilford again. Melanie is able to make her way to the end of the train but when Wilford forces Snowpiercer to come to an emergency stop, Melanie is thrown from the train.
Back in the Tail, the door between Snowpiercer and Big Alice is opened by force. A girl stands on the other side, announcing that they have 13 minutes to agree to surrender or they will freeze to death. When Layton asks who the girl is, she reveals that she is Melanie’s daughter, Alexandra Cavill, much to everyone’s surprise.

Trivia
- When trying to escape from Big Alice, Bennett says 40 cars are nothing for her. However, as reveled in Bound by One Track, 3 cars were separated before connecting to Snowpiercer. Wich means Bennett (and possibly the other engineers) must of counted the cars.
