The Original Sinners is the tenth and final episode of the third season of Snowpiercer. It is the thirtieth episode of the series overall. The episode aired on TNT March 28, 2022 and then streamed internationally on Netflix the next day.

Synopsis

TNT's: It all comes to a head as old adversaries clash, with New Eden hanging in the balance.

Netflix's: Determined to take Snowpiercer to New Eden, Layton threatens war to gain control of the engine, a move that forces Melanie to forge a new alliance.

Intro

Melanie: "I guess someone has to be the monster. The one who favors reason and shatters dreams. I've died and sacrificed my bond with Alex so many times for this train. To surrender now would render that meaningless. So maybe it was inevitable that the monster would be me."

Layton: "The original sinners, me and Melanie. I should've known it would come down to this. How else would we choose humanity's fate but by war..."

Melanie and Layton: "On Snowpiercer, 1,029 cars long."

Melanie: "Really? We both know it’s a long march to the Engine."

Tills: " You don’t have the forces to defend."

Melanie: "I can hold you off long enough."

Ruth: "And then what? Endless seesaw battles for control?"

Melanie: " No, we wait. We just wait until we know we’re right."

Alex: "Don’t do that, Mom., Change course. The young people wanna get off."

Melanie: "How can I let you, if it’s not safe? I want you with me."

Alex: "Then you’ll have to take the turn."

Melanie: "[Gets on the sub-train]

Ruth: "Oh, come on, For pity’s sake. Both of you."

Melanie: "In or out, Ruth"

Ruth: "I’m not letting you go on your own. Hey this isn’t over. Figure something out."

Ruth: "Layton took Ag-Sec, without firing a shot. His people stuck with him. He holds all the cards now, Melanie."

Melanie: "Can the Brakemen hold him?"

Ruth: "Roche won’t fight your war. He serves the people. You don’t have the pull you once did, you know."

Melanie: "I need an ally."

Ruth: "Not Wilford."

Melanie: "I can control him."

Ruth: "That’s not the point."

Melanie: " No... The Point. The point is this. [points at Snowpiercer’s blueprint] It’s everything. Every last soul on Earth. It I have to sell mine to protect theirs… so be it, right?"

Ruth: "Well, I’m sorry. But I’ve spent too long redeeming myself to go back now."

―  Ruth says goodbye to Melanie and joins Layton's side.

Wilford: "The problem is, Melanie, you’re a legend. So you do have support. Former Firsties, some guilds, etc. But you’re both militarily outmatched and down in the polls. So, you need me. Two legends are better than one."

Melanie: "I believe if we were seen as united, then the majority of passengers would choose the train, yes."

Wilford: "Well, of course. But it still comes down to fear, Fear of Layton’s colony, or fear of the train that got them this far."

Melanie: "There’s only one way that this works."

Wilford: [chuckles] Here it comes."

Melanie: " I’m Head Engineer. And you retire from Engineering altogether. It’s my train."

Wilford: "Assuming generous comforts. Meaningful consultation, and if I maintain control of certain interests of mine. Cold treatment, for example."

Melanie: "Assuming all that. And all my shame at cutting a deal with you, if that helps."

Wilford: "Yes. [Both shakes their hands]

―  Melanie forming alliance with Wilford.

“	Y'all trying to face down an army with a garden hose?	”
	— Z-Wreck to the Ag-Sec workers

Melanie: "Getting close to the bell, huh?"

Layton: "Yeah, it tolls for you too. Look, this isn't to surrender or to bargain. It's just to acknowledge."

Melanie: "All right. Thanks for letting Alex cross over."

Layton: "It was her choice. And I knew she'd be a double-edged sword."

Melanie: "Yeah. I'll probably lose her by trying to save her."

Layton: "Yeah, we both got enough ego to believe we can save everyone. We set ourselves up in an impossible role."

Melanie: "Once you get the job, it's so hard to let it go."

Layton: "You really wanna let Wilford be a part of that? You're falling right back into using fear to keep order."

Melanie: "You picked up the sword. Right back to shedding blood."

Layton: "Fear or blood?"
Melanie: "And either way... he wins."
Layton: "And we both lose."

―  Melanie and Layton realize that they are only playing into Wilford's hands by refusing to change

Wilford: "This was you, wasn't it Melanie?"

Melanie: "Actually, Andre and I came up with it together. I made it six months in here. There's suspension fluid. Stimulant. Timer. You can only stay under for so long before you have to wake yourself up and figure out where you are."

Wilford: "You're too weak to simply cut my throat, Layton. Cowards. All of you."

―  Wilford is exiled on the track scaler by Melanie and Layton.

“	Now, you old bastard, I reach down and send you into hell.	”
	— Bennett casts Wilford out of the train on the track scaler.

“	Now we'll see who's the real survivor.	”
	— Wilford goes into suspension.

Melanie: "It's a good way forward."

Layton: "The ones we love, that'll be the cost."

Layton: "Citizens of Snowpiercer, as the fork to New Eden approaches, I am proud to say that we have found a way through our impasse. We agree the only course is compromise, and the answer is individual choice."

Melanie: "The train will be divided at Ag-Sec. Every passenger will be allowed to choose between the train with me and New Eden with Andre Layton."

Layton: "Those who choose New Eden need to understand we don't know what we'll find there. The journey will be dangerous. And, yes, it will require a leap of faith. But more importantly, desire to build a new society."

Melanie: "Those of you who remain, we know that life will continue to be hard on Snowpiercer. Bit by bit, the train is breaking down. But we will no longer add to that hardship with oppression. The train will run on science and truth. And we will share the burden of our limited resources together."

Layton: "Thank you. Whatever your choice, find hope and respect in your neighbor's fate. Talk to your families. Say goodbye to your friends. The train will separate in just under six hours."

―  Layton and Melanie lay out their new plan together.

Tills: "So, what do you wanna do?"

Miss Audrey: "I was the best version of myself here. You showed me that."

Tills: "Yeah. What was I thinking? [chuckles]

Miss Audrey: "I have something to give here, With are and who I am, and… and how I can heal people in my own way. I need to stay, Bess."

Tills: "I, um… I’ve been dreaming to get off this train for so long."

Miss Audrey: "I know."

Tills: "I can’t see a life for me on Snowpiercer anymore…"

Miss Audrey: "Even if you loved me?"

Tills: "Even if I loved you. I’ll, uh… I’ll see you before we break."

―  Tills and Miss Audrey says their goodbyes.

Tills: [Knocks the door.]

Roche: "Oh, shit. Come here. Come here… Want a coffee?"

Tills: "Yeah. What are you gonna do?"

Roche: "We’re going. What about you?"

Tills: "I’m coming with you."

Roche: "At least we’ll be together. Anyway, I gave Carly the choice"

Carly: "I definitely want off."

Roche: "So that’s what we’re doing."

Tills: "Cheers, boss."

Roche: "Cheers, Bess."

―  Tills going to New Eden with Roche.

Melanie: "So how long do you think she will she can keep going?"

Bennett: "If you’re lucky, you hop from crisis to crisis for another decade, maybe two."

Melanie: "I need you, Ben."

Bennett: "I needed you too. I followed your science to the decision of getting off. You nearly killed that"

Melanie: "It’s still alive, It’s just down the line. And if we’re together I know we can get there."

Bennett: "I will serve with you ‘till the end of the world. But that’s only half of it. You want me to stay, I need the rest of you."

Melanie: "I’m here. [sighs] I’m yours."

Bennett: "Then New Eden can wait."

―  Melanie staying on Snowpiercer with Bennett.

Miles: "Melanie and Ben are the best engineers there’s ever been. I need to keep learning with them. I’ll be fine."

Josie: "Okay. Hey, One Tail. [Fist bump]

Layton: "One Tail. [Fist bump]

Miles: "One Tail. [Fist bump] Always. Okay, no crying, I’ll meet you at the breakpoint to say goodbye."

Josie: "Okay."

Layton: "Come here. [Group hug.]

Miles: "I love you guys. [Walks away.]

Josie: "Oh god. It hurts."

Layton: "Yeah, everyone’s gotta choose their own path."

―  Miles saying goodbye to his foster parents, Layton and Josie.

LJ: "Well, he's a pilgrim now."

Oz: "There's still time to come with me, LJ."

LJ: "You're chickening out, from me, from power and for what? To go plant potatoes in an igloo? You don't even know..."

Oz: "Yeah. I like that part. Goodbye, Lilah Junior Folger-Osweiler."

LJ: "Yeah, I'm gonna drop the Osweiler! I'm gonna come out on top! I'm a survivor!"

―  Oz moves forward with his life while LJ faces her future with unconvincing bravado

Melanie: "Um… I may or may not have put a lot of socks in there. There’s a first aid kit, and my jacket. You probably don’t want it, but it’s the one I survived in."

Alex: "I love you [both sobbing] I have to go. (…) I don’t remember what the Earth is like and I, I wanna find out."

Melanie: "It’s your choice. I’m just so happy that you’re here now."

Alex: "Mom."

Melanie: "Yeah?"

Alex: "The train is falling apart. The track is deteriorating."

Melanie: "You know you don’t have to worry about me, huh? I’m gonna be okay. And you will too. I love you."

Alex: "I love you too."

Melanie: "I love you so much. I’m so proud of you. I’m so sorry I’m so sorry for all the things that I did, I’m so sorry for—"

Alex: "It’s okay. It’s okay."

Melanie: "Okay. Okay. [Both chuckles]."

“	“Ease their journey, and keep them safe” And you don’t need a protocol manual for that, Tristan.	”
	— Ruth saying goodbye to Tristan, the new Head of Hospitality.

“	Citizens of Snowpiercer. We are five minutes to separation. Please make your final arrangements and stay clear of the disconnection point. For those aboard Big Alice… Farewell and good luck.	”
	— Tristan's announcement before separation.

Melanie: "I guess we're guardians of each other's loved ones now."

Layton: "Well, that gives me hope. I'll take care of her."

Melanie: "I know you will. Good luck, Andre."

Layton: "Godspeed, Melanie."

―  Melanie and Layton say their last goodbyes.

Tills: "No, I can’t do it. Um, I’m sorry you’re the one I have to lose."

Layton: "Go get her. [Both hugs.]

Tills: "Take care of each other."

―  Tills changed her mind in the last minute and stays on Snowpiercer with Miss Audrey.

Bennett: "Separating now. Good bye Javi"

Javi: "Adios, amigo."

―  Two engineers of both train saying goodbye.

“	It’s gonna be worth it. We’re gonna be outside in the sunshine so soon, okay?	”
	— Josie calming down Winnie while Big Alice is shaking.

Miles: "Solid numbers. Energy distribution’s improved."

Melanie: "It’s the loss of weight. [To Ben] Can you still see them?"

Bennett: "No, they’ve got weather."

Javi: "Alright, here we go. The front of the train's hitting the old trestle bridge."

Layton: "The what? You weren't gonna tell nobody about that?"

Javi: "I didn't wanna worry you, man."

Layton: "Thanks."

―  Javi alarms Layton with a last minute revelation.

Alex: "We’re here."

Layton: "We okay?"

Zarah: "Yeah, she’s okay. [To Liana] It’s okay."

Javi: "What’s the temperature, Alex?"

Alex: "I’m reading… Um… It’s minus ten. It’s.. actually minus five now. It’s climbing."

Layton: "Inversion?"

Alex: "Yeah, inversion."

“	Passengers, we’re in a warm spot and temperature is rapidly rising.	”
	— Javi making an announcement to everyone after arriving.

“	Welcome to the new world.	”
	— Zarah to Liana after arriving at New Eden.

Trivia

• The title of the episode is a line in Andre Layton's opening dialogue.
• The train splits in two at Ag Sec; the front continues to travel around the globe, while the back makes the turn to the Horn of Africa in the hope to find New Eden.
  • Snowpiercer and Big Alice are separated for the first time since the end of Season 1. Since Big Alice derailed and the old trestle bridge was destroyed, the trains will never again be able to reconnect.
• For the first time in the series the opening monologue is spilt between two characters: Andre Layton and Melanie Cavill.
• Big Alice's Engine is seen being manned for the first time since The First Blow, this time by Bennett Knox under Layton's command and then later by Javi and Alex.
• Bojan Boscovic is revealed to still be alive, having been rescued from the Aquarium explosion, visibly more scarred and nursed back to health in secret by Mrs. Headwood as Wilford's new cold man. She also made the side effect of loss of sensation into impervious to pain.
• The Tailies side with Layton along with the crew of the Pirate train, Ruth Wardell and John Osweiller while the Brakemen initially work to maintain peace as a neutral faction.
• Lights ran the resistance during the conflict and stole all the helmets, of the EVA Suit’s
• Despite there being Jackboots, none are at the front line, in the Night Car with Wilford, or the episode.
• Wilford is exiled from the train on Melanie's Track scaler with a supply of the suspension drug and stimulants, just like Melanie had during her six months in the vehicle before her rescue.
• When the trains separate, Sam Roche, his daughter Carly, Oz, Alex, Ruth, Javi, Mrs. Headwood, Boki, Sykes and the Tailies join Big Alice while Miss Audrey stays with Snowpiercer as does Miles, Bennett, Tristan, Miss Gillies and Doctor Pelton. After initially deciding to stay on Big Alice, Bess Till changes her mind and remains on Snowpiercer with Audrey.
• Bennett suggests that Snowpiercer only has another decade or two at most if Melanie is lucky with all of the hardships that the train will face.
• Miles is seen working in the Engine for the first time since The Train Demanded Blood.
• Layton ends up with Javi and Alex as his Engineers which is a big change because typically, Layton is seen working with Bennett and Alex while Javi is mostly in a supportive background role. This was true even in Season 2 before the Pirate train when Layton dealt most often with Bennett while discussing train matters while Melanie was gone.
• The song playing in the background as LJ dies is Brian Hyland's "Sealed With a Kiss," the same song that she danced to in Without Their Maker as Layton realized that LJ was the serial killer.
• The song that Miss Audrey sings as Big Alice travels to New Eden is "Blacklisted" by Neko Case.
• Bess Till becomes Lead Brakemen, after Roche leaves for New Eden and Tristan becomes Head of Hospitality, after Ruth leaves as well.
• Big Alice derails upon arriving to New Eden due to the track to the Horn of Africa being as bad as expected. But the Engine derails with only a walkable tilt, while the other visible train cars remain more or less upright. The passengers make it out unharmed and discover New Eden to be habitable.
  • The journey also wrecks the old trestle bridge that Big Alice crosses before reaching the valley.
• The chosen spot for New Eden is a valley in the Horn of Africa that Alex states is the best spot to have a microclimate.
• Three months after Big Alice arrives at New Eden, Melanie spots something shooting into the sky and exploding.
• The derailment of Big Alice and the survivors emerging from the wreckage is similar to the end of the movie where Snowpiercer derailed. Unlike in the movie, everyone survived while only two children survived the crash in the movie.
