Sub-Train cart.

The Sub-Train is a self-contained train within a train. It runs almost the entire length of Snowpiercer and is divided into three categories, one for each of the Classes[1].

Description

The Sub-Train is a monorail track design with a single suspended narrow guideway, which means only one train car run at any given time. It's possible that horizontal switching takes place. The monorail system is separated into three sectors, each of one of the Classes, which means technically up to three carts in various directions can run the length of each sector. Considering the length of the train, the Sub-Train is used regularly by the characters, even though it is shown only a few times.

Under the Sub-Train tunnel also lies a narrow maintenance corridor that provides access to the underside of the train which contains mechanical parts like hydraulics control. In case the Breachmen needs to access these tubes, a semi-transparent membrane is erected around the affected parts of the train, as for the heat to not leak out.

The Sub-Train tunnel also has a hydraulic system to keep the train steady. Damage to the system by Erik Sotto caused the Torreta Canyon Crisis.

History

The body of Sean Wise was found in a floor panel of the Sub-Train, that was discovered by Jakes Carter.

After being discovered as the murderer, Erik Sotto was corned in the Sub-Train of Utility Car (C0778), by the Jackboots and killed.

Before being killed, Erik shot a electrical box that later leaked and caused a electrical fault in Utility Car (C0778), the fault then caused one of the breaks to seize. A Breach team attempted to replace a motor to fix the problem, but it swings whilst being hoisted, killing Engineer Peter Dimarco and causes the train to buckle; numerous carriages rock back and forth. Melanie then goes outside to fix the master hydraulic by re-attaching the hydraulic pipe, but has trouble doing so as the train approaches the Torreta Canyon and derailment. Melanie is soon able to reattach the cable and the hydraulics come back.

During the Revolution, many Jackboots (at least 15) were killed in the Sub-Train by a large spike firing machine, manned by Big John, Jakes Carter and several Tailies. When they ran out of spikes, Big John held of the Jackboots while the machine was moved to the next barricade, killing 2 before he fell.

Later, in the Sub-Train, a fight broke out between Sam Roche, Andre Layton and Nolan Grey and 2 Jackboots, but the two rebels were overpowered and Roche was knocked unconscious. Before Grey could execute Layton, Murray arrived with Strong Boy and Z-Wreck, whom he had rescued from The Drawers. The three overpowered Grey and his men, but Layton had them leave the Jackboots unconscious and flee with Roche uptrain for safety.

When Wilford's sabotage of The Engine went wrong, the Tunnelmen were forced to manually disengage the bogie motors, so Big Alice could push with less resistance, in order to jump-start them.

During the rescue attempt of Melanie Cavill, Bojan Boscovic tried to disconnect The Aquarium, in the Sub-Train, by unlocking two J-links. However he only unlocked one before 7 Jackboots stopped him and the car was destroyed soon after.

Trivia

  • As showing in the Behind the Scenes video, they only have a small part of the Sub-Train constructed while everything else is added using CGI in post-production.
  • The Tunnelmen, including Jakes Carter and Truck, are responsible for maintaining the Sub-Train.
  • Each Sub-Train cart has four seats and faces towards the front of the train.
  • The Sub-Train is accessible, in the battery section of Utility Cars, by a hatch in the floor.
  • The Sub-Train is not accessible for the Tail Section.
  • As Snowpiercer's crew can close the boundaries between classes ("borders"), the Sub-Train can be blocked as well.
