The Hospitality Department is responsible for smooth relations onboard Snowpiercer.

History[edit | edit source]

The Head of Hospitality uniform is either a higher-cut teal jacket with a matching skirt for women, or a full teal suit for men. Lower rank hospitality members wear either a low-cut teal jacket with matching pants for women or a gray suit with teal striped tie for men.

Assignments[edit | edit source]

This department is responsible for maintaining smooth relations between the Crew and Ticketed Passengers and between Ticketed Passengers of different Classes. This mostly implies making sure First Class passengers enjoy their trip and project an impression of calm to the guests: "Calm Hospitality, Calm Train". Members of Hospitality are in charge of protocol and diplomacy within Snowpiercer. The Radio Room and Hospitality Office is located up-train, close to the Engine Car.

New Year Celebration Protocol Manual

Members of Hospitality often mention protocol manuals, and one specifically for New Years celebrations is in one of the drawers in the Hospitality Office.

First Class Dining Car waitstaff serve Guests during service hours. Two Maîtres d'Hôtel oversee the Dining Car and greet guests in their black livery while Waiters in white jackets and Maids in black and white aprons bring them food and drinks.

Chefs are responsible for preparing delicate meals for First Class Passengers. They wear a white double-breasted jacket and toque and a black apron. Cooks prepare more homely food served in Mess Halls for Second and Third Class Passengers.

While janitorial duties are probably part of the Maintenance Department, First Class Housekeepers are in charge of keeping the First Class private carriages spotless. They wear a white apron on their light grey uniform.

Throughout the Series[edit | edit source]

When Snowpiercer departed, Melanie Cavill was the head of Hospitality. After being overthrown in Season 1, she is replaced by Ruth Wardell, who is then fired by Wilford and the role is given to Kevin McMahon until his death.

Head of Hospitality Melanie Cavill was seen addressing the other Heads of Departments and seemed to be "Mr. Wilford's" second-in-command, running the Train affairs on a daily basis. She was also the Voice of the Train and was responsible for making public announcements twice a day (the first at 8:00 AM and the second in the evening), synchronizing time for the whole train.

First Class Concierge Ruth Wardell was second to her and was in charge of organizing day-to-day life and activities for the First Class Passengers, as well as announcements to the Tail section inhabitants. She also presided over LJ Folger's tribunal. Along with the Head of Hospitality, she took part in the First Class Committee. A Second Class Committee and a Third Class Committee might also exist. Concierge Assistant Tristan helped her in her duties. Members of Hospitality wear teal uniforms.

After Melanie Cavill was overthrown by the Tailie Revolution. The Head of Hospitality role was replaced by Ruth Wardell. It was revealed that there are also many apprentice hospitality members, which Kevin was originally, before being promoted on Big Alice. Ruth got Zarah to join her in the department. She done a great work until being fired by Joseph Wilford and replaced the role by Kevin. Kevin would resume his duty on Wilford's rolling gulag.

After Pirate Train and Wilford's rolling gulag reconnected and Kevin got killed. Ruth resume her duty as Snowpiercer's Head of Hospitality. When Snowpiercer and Big Alice separated. Ruth passed the Head of Hospitality role to Tristan.

As we enter the Yukon Territory of the former Canada, we remind you, for your personal safety, be prepared to brace. We are 6 years, 9 months, and 26 days from departure. At the tone, the exact time will be 0800 hours.

Do you think I want to be here? Eh? That Mr. Wilford wants me to be doing this? Snowpiercer is all that's left of the world. Each of us has a personal responsibility to the Engine Eternal. You Tailies barely have to do anything. Yeah? Just sit around and don't rebel.

We all know it’s been a tough 48 hours. It seems the events have been on Mr. Wilford’s mine as well. He’s written a personal message for us all. To my loyal and trusted crew, without whom this mission could never succeed. In this time of adversity, I ask you, the lead stewards of humanity, to remain unshaken in spirit and resolve, as you’ve done so nobly these past seven years. By your steady hand, we will ride out this hardship, and outlive the ice. Bound by our cause and our need. Wilford.

It has come to Mr. Wilford's attention that a work stoppage is planned for today. Mr. Wilford would like to remind you that your labor is sacred! As non-paying passengers, it is also your ticket aboard. These are the terms. We all have our places and our jobs, and Mr. Wilford expects...If this work stoppage goes ahead, Mr. Wilford will seize 10 striking workers at random and send them to the Tail. He will bring 10 Tailies forward to fill their posts. You think life in Third is bad? There are 400 souls downtrain who would kill for what you have! Protect it! Call off the strike. Thank you.

Attention all passengers. Wilford Industries wishes you good morning. Yesterday, during the Torreta Canyon Crisis, Electrical Engineer Peter DiMarco paid the ultimate price for our survival. Let us all observe a moment for his spark. As crops must grow, new blood will flow. So as is our custom, we will now announce an apprentice replacement. Today, the greatest of honors...The young man known as Miles and Miles will be fast-tracked to the Engine! Thank you for your faith and your labors. As always, our Great Engineer, Mr. Wilford, wishes you a pleasant day.

Ladies and Gentlemen of First and Second class, this is your head of Hospitality speaking. It is 1:32 pm, Central time. This has been a troubling period, but we are pleased to announced that peace in Third is now assured. The mutinous faction has agreed to surrender, and all services will soon be restored in full. As ever, on behalf of the late Mr. Wilford, we appreciate your patience. Thank you.

Attention, all passengers. The temperature outside, is minus 121.9 degrees Celsius. As we approach Chicago, Mile Zero of our cycle life, be prepared to brace. We’re all haunted by our choices, the personal choices we all made when we boarded this train, and the collective choices that brought us to that day. Choices made over decades, even when we knew climate change was real. And finally, my own choice to pirate this ark, and lie to you all, which has brought us to where we are now, May we all move forward with greater awareness, of the choices that we make. We are one train. And today, that train chooses change. I hereby relinquish governance of Snowpiercer to the rebel forces. These are our revolutions, 994 cars long.

The Time of Two Engines[edit | edit source]

Citizens of Snowpiercer. It took us seven long years to cast off Wilford’s class system. And now, the man is back and latched onto the Tail. We know he’s willing to stop us cold, but Brakemen and the rebel army have control of the new border. Ruth Wardell and Hospitality will lead diplomatic initiatives. Snowpiercer will use all means necessary to defend the liberties we’ve won. But… with everything we have sacrificed, it is my great regret. And my reluctant duty, to put our democratic experiment on hold, and to extend martial law until further notice.

Good morning, Snowpiercer. Today, as we climb the Tibetan Plateau, the temperature outside is minus 118 degrees Celsius. The wind is north-northwest at 30 to 40 knots. Hospitality would like to remind you all to be mindful of the change in elevation today. For our window watchers, today, we will be passing Lhasa, the famous Forbidden City of what was formerly Tibet.

Good evening, Snowpiercer. Earlier today, high above us, another of our weather balloons made contact with Engineer Cavill, out there on her own, a lone spark lighting the way forward. On this train, none of us are strangers to despair, so we should celebrate these victories when they come. We must hold fast to our mission, our vision and ourselves. So… as we prepare to turn around and return to her, let us all say a prayer for Engineer Cavill, and our dreams of a life one day… beyond Snowpiercer.

Citizens of Snowpiercer, today we are all in mourning for our Breachmen. We are afraid because there are those among us who want us to be. This violence was orchestrated to divide us, to compromise us, by taking out our best. We can’t start turning on each other. That is exactly what they want to happen. Whoever did this terrible crime, wants you to believe that it was the weakest among us. But the real enemy is back there on Big Alice, lying in wait. Some of your neighbors supports his return, but we cast away Wilford Law once already. And I will remind you of the call that unites us. We are one train. Snowpiercer.

Wilford: "This is Head Engineer Wilford. Boarding party, stand down. We will not be taking… Snowpiercer by force. Stand down. Weapons down. Andre Layton has the train."

Layton: "My fellow passengers... Today, for the first time since our departure... you will have a say in our destination, and your choice will determine our future. By now, you know that Melanie's sacrifice gave us a map. Proof that there are places on the Earth that are warming. Traveling fast and light, we tested each of them. Sulawesi, Gujarat, Managua, the Atacama. And each one of these let us down. I know that you have suffered badly because of our decision to break the train. But there is one more location on which I ask you to stake your hope: The Horn of Africa. The journey to return there will be fraught with risk and the hardships will continue, but we have someone here who can renew our faith. Someone we had given up on believing in… But I’ll let her tell you."

My fellow passengers, the day has come to welcome the child of Miss Zarah Fahrami and Mr. Andre Layton. As is tradition, we will ring baby bells on the hour every hour until the baby arrives.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, passengers of Snowpiercer and Big Alice. It’s not tradition for Hospitality to make speeches, but as we approach the Great Pyramids for the final time, it seems only fitting to mark the occasion. I’m proud of this train and every passenger aboard, but New Even is our collective chance at a fresh start. And while it may seems like it’s a miracle, it’s because of one who stands among us. Engineer Cavill. Time and again you put your life on the line for this. To new beginnings.

Attention, passengers. This is Melanie Cavill. Tonight, I witnessed a Snowpiercer unlike any I'd seen before. United. Borderless. Free of class and greed. The dream of New Eden made that possible, but a dream left unchecked can be a dangerous thing, and we cannot forget what got us this far. Reason, discipline... And truth. The journey to the Horn of Africa is not safe. The track is unsound. If we knew what we would find when we got there, it might be worth the risk, but we don't. New Eden is a fiction invented by Layton. He and his crew have never been there. He lied to you. It's 8:42 pm and the temperature outside is minus 98 degrees. Goodnight, Snowpiercer, and long may you roll.

Layton: "Citizens of Snowpiercer, as the fork to New Eden approaches, I am proud to say that we have found a way through our impasse. We agree the only course is compromise, and the answer is individual choice."
Melanie: "The train will be divided in Ag-Sec. Every passenger will be allowed to choose between the train with me and New Eden with Andre Layton."
Layton: "Those who choose New Eden need to understand we don’t know what we’ll find there. The journey will be dangerous. And, yes, it will require a leap of faith. But more importantly, desire to build a new society."
Melanie: "Those of you who remain, we know life will continue to be hard on Snowpiercer. Bit by bit, the train is breaking down. But we will no longer add to that hardship with oppression. The train will run on science and truth. And we will share the burden of our limited resources together."
Layton: "Thank you. Whatever your choice, find hope and respect in your Neighbor’s fate. Talk to your families. Say goodbye to your friends. The train will separate in just under six hours."
