Born to Bleed is the sixth episode of the third season of Snowpiercer. It is the twenty-sixth episode of the series overall. The episode aired on TNT February 28, 2022 and then streamed internationally on Netflix the next day.

Synopsis

TNT's: As the bomber is revealed, Layton comes to terms with his past decisions before making an irreversible call.

Netflix's: The search for the person who tried to kill Layton culminates in a deadly confrontation. Roche continues to struggle with his anger toward Wilford.

Intro

“	I've been told over and over that time heals all wounds. But there's one man on Snowpiercer who will never let mine close. (...) Wounds fester. They rot. They don't go away. Maybe it's just me. I pick, unable to let wounds heal. It's in my nature to provoke. Or maybe I was just born to bleed. (...) Layton's moving on from all the wounds he inflicted, but we're still bleeding, even if the trauma's hidden deep, on Snowpiercer, 1,029 cars long.	”

Plot

SPOILERS AHEAD

As Pike gives his perspective, we see a flashback where he put the fire on the Name Tree and when he denotate the bomb at Seed Bank Car. He got a nightmare that Ruth want to break up with him and Strong Boy haunting him. Z-Wreck and Astrid woke him up and told him that someone tries to assassinate Layton. The tree made their way to Big Alice (Engine). Layton and Zarah thanks them and ask them to guard Zarah and Liana until this problem unravels. Pike stays up at Big Alice's Engine while Astrid and Z-Wreck guarded the border at docking car.

Till and Sykes investigate Storage Cars and found out that a bunch of ammonium nitrate is gone. That's how the terrorist made the bomb along with ethanol stole from Z-Wreck. Till realized that these same materials were used to make fertilized bomb in back in Year Three Rebellion. Meanwhile Doctor Pelton visits Layton at Big Alice's Engine Car to check on him because the bomb earlier. Layton assures everyone that he's okay.

Till meets up with Lights, who is now running a repair stall in the Market and wears artificial fingers. Lights told her that her bomb recipe from her cookbook was torn out. Only The Tailie War Council know about this book, since only Layton, Josie, Z-Wreck, Lights and Pike are still alive. Pike is the only suspect. As Layton realized, Pike was carrying Liana. Layton and Zarah finally retrieve Liana from Pike. As Layton chases Pike on Big Alice, Pike knocked Layton down and made his way to Snowpiercer. Astrid and Z-Wreck were confused why he was in a rush, he told the two that he's getting diapers for Liana.

As Pike continues to escape, he went back to the resistance's hideout where he and Ruth hide when fighting the Wilfordites aboard Wilford's Rolling Gulag, only to found Asha there. Asha's wearing her EVA suit once again, probably avoiding people as she's still not used to Snowpiercer. Pike talks to Asha and realized that New Eden was a lie. Meanwhile, Layton and Till investigates Pike's Pied-a-terre in the Market and found Lights' bomb recipe hidden in his bed. Ruth later arrived and told Layton that she and Pike formed a romantic bond together, Layton told Ruth that Pike had changed. (Ruth is easily convinced as Pike already dropped a few hints in the last two episodes.) Ruth get to the resistance's hideout and found Pike with Asha. Pike escaped again.

Layton, Ruth, Till and Zarah discusses what to do at Big Alice's Engine. Brakeman Tyson, now guarding the room told Layton that Josie and Miles are here to visit. The two discussed that Layton should Old Ivan's way: Two people would talk until they come to an agreement, then the Tail would memorizes it. If the two couldn't talk, they would both call for the knives and kill the other to dead. Layton did the announcement for Pike to come. The tailies gathered once again in their old home. While Ruth, Roche, Till and Carly stays together in Roche's couchette, Pike and Layton talks together. Pike remarks that Layton used him so many times, Pike also told Layton that he knows about Asha and New Eden's lies. The two then calls for the knives, Layton finally killed Pike after a long battle. The Tailies and Ruth marked Pike's death, Layton stayed to reflect what he has done.

Subplot

Ruth asks Doctor Kanu about Sam Roche's condition. Kanu remarks that Roche is calm but still calmly obsessed with retribution. He thanks Ruth and Till for coming almost everyday. Ruth told Roche that someone tried to assassin Layton and the train needs him to get back to work. Roche denied and told Ruth that the only reason Kanu gets to be psychiatrist is because he boarded the train with many self-help books.

Josie reunites with Miles, now all grown up. Miles told Josie that Wilford still kept the apprenticeship program aboard Wilford's Rolling Gulag. Miles told her that he's top of the engineering program. The two reminded each other of The Tailies' pride.

Alexandra Cavill meets Carly Roche in the 3rd Class Mess Hall. Alex asked Carly how she's doing, and assures her that she's not a Wilfordite. The two girls start their friendship. Alex intimidated Doctor Kanu to allow Carly to visit Roche. Carly helped her father through his struggles and the two burst into tears.

As Lead Brakeman Till is busy chasing down Pike, Miss Audrey sneaked into the Night Car and asked if LJ could take her to visit Wilford. Audrey traded Robert's spare fake eye as a price. Brakeman Elliot handcuffs Audrey and takes her to the Library Car. Junior Brakeman Charles who is guarding is reluctant but Elliot allows Audrey inside, only to find Wilford in a deep trauma because of the suspension drug. Wilford seems to be on his softer side and wants to actually help Layton to get to New Eden. Miss Audrey is pissed for all efforts she did aboard the Pirate Train to support him.

Trivia

• The title of the episode is a line in Pike's opening dialogue.
• Strong Boy briefly appears in the form of a nightmare that Pike has.
• The sword that Layton shows Pike appears to be the same one that he used in Into the White to kill a Jackboot.
• Miles appears for the first time since A Single Trade. It's revealed that he has continued his apprenticeship and is at the top of his class.
  • Miles mentions that Wilford had continued the apprenticeships during the six months that the Pirate Train was away despite the harsh conditions.
• Wilford is shown to have been traumatized by his experiences under the suspension drug, turning him into a shell of what he once was. He now believes that the science supports the Horn of Africa as a possible location for recolonization and no longer shows any immediate desire for power, much to Miss Audrey's frustration.
• Although not explicitly stated, Till appears to have resumed her role as the new Train Detective from Season 2, investigating the bombing from A New Life.
  • She was previously seen investigating the fire in A New Life, further supporting this.
• It's suggested that the Tailie gathering in this episode is the first time that all of the Tailies are back together in the Tail since the end of the revolution in Season 1.
• During the Year Three Rebellion, there was a Tailie War Council and fertilizer bombs created by Lights, such as the one that Pike had used to attempt to assassinate Layton. It's suggested that with all of the losses that the Tail has suffered, Layton and Pike are the only surviving members of the War Council from that particular rebellion.
• Born to Bleed and Ouroboros are the only episodes of the series to not include a single outside shot of either train.
• Born to Bleed is the only episode of the series that does not mention Melanie Cavill.
• The concussion that Layton had suffered from Pike's bomb, exacerbated with the fight with Pike, puts Layton into a coma.
