Six months after the events of Into the White, the ten car long Pirate Train has been traveling around the world, searching for the warm spots determined by Melanie Cavill's model, that Layton and Alex found that the research station, together with a letter from Melanie explaining how she choose to sacrifice herself for the sake of the climate model.
The remaining 1023 carriages, nicknamed Wilford's Rolling Gulag by Layton, is now powered by Big Alice's Engine, and is run by a strict authoritarian rule under Wilford. He has obsessively trying to track down Layton and his train for the last months. Conditions on Big Alice are bad, the engine struggles to power so many cars, leaving Wilford to decommissioning first class to save energy. However, it is still minus degrees inside the train. All classes have disappeared, replaced with just one: the working class. The resistance still goes strong: fugitive Ruth has hidden away in a carriage and is directing all operations and taking care of passengers. After determining the ice buildup on the track, Wilford estimated that the Pirate Train traveled this way about a month ago. He then ordered Javi, who is revealed to survived with facial scar, to switch to south track. Zarah, now working for Wilford, passes a message to Ruth about the direction the train is heading.
The Pirate Train is shown to be in North Korea, were the crew examines a potential warm spot and it's potential ability to support life. Ben has gone outside to try to retrieve data through ice samples. Miss Audrey is as uncooperative as ever and very loyal to Wilford, while Sykes helps aboard as best she can, claiming she just do her duties as a Prisoner of War. As Ben returns, he suddenly falls through a hole in the ground. The crew abroad the train loses contact with him, leaving them distressed. Layton chooses to go outside and follow Ben's trace to come and help him. Josie insists on following along, despite protests from Layton. When preparing to go outside, Josie expresses frustration many in the crew shares about their yet unsuccessful quest to found warm spots able to host human life. She wonders "what if Melanie was wrong?", but Layton dismisses her. Before walking outside through the cold lock, the two share a kiss, and then falls into an awkward silence, implying they have some unresolved feelings for each other. Abroad, Alex is forced to start the train moving through to need for the engine to release heat to avoid a meltdown. Alex describes the engine has being "a jet motor tied to a toy wagon" - with only ten cars the engine produces so much energy, their system risks overheating.
Back on Wilford's Rolling Gulag the problem is the opposite. The cold makes essential train systems suffer. Zarah reported that Ag-Sec suffers some production failure, pipe lines are frozen in big parts of second and third class, the chains and some drawer cars lost heat completely. Zarah recommended cutting the First Class, but Wilford refuses because he would restore First Class after getting Snowpiercer's Engine back. Kevin asked if they can cull some passengers to preserve energy, Zarah and Wilford reminded him that those are the terms keeping Miss Audrey alive. Wilford tries to buy Javier by applying the cream on his scar and tell him that sometimes it has to be harsh to have order.
Meanwhile the resistance would secretly help the passengers, Z-Wreck secretly gives the seamstresses and Lights steal some food from Ag-Sec for the Tailies. Tyson is revealed to be in the Compost, Pike gives her a bath token as a reward for helping the resistance. Kevin, seeking for clues of the resistance, arrived at the Night Car, ask for any clues from LJ Folger and John Osweiller the new Night Car managers. Jackboot Stu Whiggins, sleeping in the Night Car got pulled by LJ told Kevin that the Second Class Watermaster gives hot bath to the resistance. Kevin and Wilford later caught Watermaster Arnoldo Reyas and Tyson having a hot bath. The watermaster is forced to tell the resistances hideout, coercing Ruth to change her new hiding place to the 1st Class Dining Car which is now in minus temperature.
Back in North Korea, Bennett found himself in a room, Layton and Josie found him and was setting some ropes and reels to pull him up. Layton slowly get down in the room and get Bennett attached to the rope. Josie got Bennett up and gets him aboard as he's about to faint, and come back to get Layton later. Layton discovers the room deeper and found out that it was a nuclear reactor, he later saw running engine and heard a sound. He found a room which appeared to be someone's living place. Then someone suddenly attack Layton from the back, the two had small fight and Layton knock the one unconscious. Layton rescued the person back to Pirate Train. Meanwhile, Martin and Miss Audrey tries to seize the Pirate Train to get back to Wilford. Sykes refuses to help so the two put her in the cage in Library Car. While Till and Alex runs a discharge sequence, Miss Audrey knocks Till out with Martin standing on the hatch, preventing Till to get up, Audrey convinces Alex to get back to Wilford. Till eventually get back and persuade Alex to get the crew back aboard.
Back aboard Wilford's Rolling Gulag, Watermaster Arnoldo Reyas and Tyson got a public punishment by getting human waste splashed on their body, or as Kevin called "un-bath." Joseph Wilford eats his luxurious dinner in Headwoods' Lab (Big Alice) with Mrs. Headwood, who is performing ultrasound for Zarah Ferami's baby. Many miles away, Layton is taking care of the new survivor aboard Pirate Train.

Plot[edit | edit source]
