The second season of TNT's dystopian thriller television drama series, Snowpiercer was picked up for a season order May 2019. The season premiered on January 25, 2021.

On December 30, 2020, it was announced via Netflix UK & Ireland Twitter page that season 2 would be released on Netflix on 26 January, 2021.[1]

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

An entirely new power struggle emerges, causing a dangerous rift as people are divided between their loyalty to Layton and to Mr. Wilford, who has a new train, new technology and a game plan that keeps everyone guessing. While Layton battles Wilford for the soul of Snowpiercer, Melanie leads the charge on a shocking new discovery that could change the fate of humanity.

In May 2019, it was announced that the series would air on TBS instead of TNT for a Q2 2020 release, and that a second season had already been ordered by the network.[6] That month, it was also announced that Huanxi Media Group had signed on to broadcast the first two seasons exclusively in China. Manson returned as showrunner for the second season.[7] In September 2019, the decision to change networks was reversed, with the series once again set to air on TNT. [8] Season 2 released on January 25, 2020.

Principal photography for the second season began on October 21, 2019 and ended on March 20, 2020 in Langley, British Columbia. On March 12, 2020, it was announced via Variety that production was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[10]

On October 8, 2020, at New York Comic Con, TNT announced that the second season is set to premiere on January 25, 2021.[11] On December 30, 2020, it was announced via Netflix UK & Ireland Twitter page that season 2 would released on Netflix on 26 January, 2021.[1]

TNT announced on October 8, 2020, during its New York Comic Con panel that season two would premiere on Monday, January 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.[12] Sean Bean and Rowan Blanchard joined alongside Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs for the announcement.
