Alexandra "Alex" Cavill is a character on TNT's Snowpiercer. She is portrayed by Rowan Blanchard,[1] while her younger counterpart is portrayed by Grace Sunar.

She is a self-assured girl, who is wise beyond her years and has mysterious connections to the history of Snowpiercer. She is the daughter of Melanie Cavill and was believed dead for seven years. She acted as the Engineer on Big Alice, until the train reconnected with Snowpiercer and Wilford eventually seized power over both trains.

Throughout the series

History

Alexandra was born to Melanie Cavill ten years prior to the Freeze. When the Freeze occurred, she boarded Big Alice instead of Snowpiercer, leading Melanie to believe that Alexandra had died in the Freeze. In reality, Alex was saved by Mr. Wilford although her grandparents had refused to leave and did in fact die in the Freeze. When Wilford carried out his cull, he woke up Alex (unknowingly her friend Shilo as well) and saved her from the cars that were separated.

Believed to be Dead

Alexandra is mentioned numerous times by Melanie, as she remembers her daughter. After Melanie loses control of Snowpiercer, she turns to Miss Audrey in the Nightcar wherein she reveals she feels the most guilty for leaving Alexandra behind when Snowpiercer departed.

When Snowpiercer is docked by Big Alice, Alexandra appears as a diplomat for Mr. Wilford, threatening Snowpiercer and demanding to see Melanie Cavill, her mother; this is a shocking reveal for both Layton and Ruth who believe Alexandra to be dead.[2]

Mr. Wilford's engineer

Alex presents Snowpiercer with a list of supplies demanded by Mr. Wilford before he will put the trains moving again. She is later reunited with Melanie who is shocked to see that her daughter is still alive, but Alex acts coldly towards her. Alex eventually visits Melanie in the brig and explains that Wilford had saved her life, but Melanie's parents didn't want to leave and that they had thus died in the Freeze. The two bond for a moment before Alex asks about the snow that Melanie had collected and leaves in a huff at her mother's answer.

Later Melanie is called to the Engine after Layton's failed invasion where, to her surprise and pride, she discovers that Alex is the train's Engineer. Wilford orders Alex to bring the trains to a stop and decides to disconnect from Snowpiercer, let the passengers die and then come back for the train. Alex is clearly hesitant at performing such a murderous act and Melanie attempts to convince her daughter not to go through with it. Alex eventually decides to follow Wilford's orders only to have the connecting mechanism explode. Melanie explains to the two how she had planted a bomb on it and reveals that Wilford had overbuilt the mechanism, something that Melanie had warned him about before and the two trains are now permanently linked. Alex is left impressed with her mother's ingenuity, laughing and acknowledging that Melanie is right, and Wilford has no choice but to start again. After some hesitation, Wilford gives Alex the order to start the trains moving again.[3]

Personality

Alexandra is a bright teenager with an exceptional skillset in engineering. Spending almost half her life on Big Alice, where most of the kids were killed in Wilford's culling, she has few friends, most notable ones being seamstress Emilia, Till and Carly.

Relationships

Melanie Cavill

When Melanie and Alex first met again, Alex was acting cold and indifferent toward her mother. Few meetings in we can see that while Alex is angry, she acknowledges Melanie's engineering skills and the trains' expertise (such as feeling what is wrong). Further in the show Alex and Melanie start repairing their relationship: Alex talked about her life on Big Alice and the conditions right before and after Snowpiercer disembarked.

Joseph Wilford

Wilford took Alex with him on Big Alice after Melanie disembarked without Wilford and her. Wilford seemingly took Alex under his wing and taught her all there was to know about both trains. After joining Big Alice and Snowpiercer Alex started to oppose Wilford's commands, rather joining forces with Melanie.

When Wilford starts reconnecting with Miss Audrey Alex doesn't attempt to hide her disgust toward Wilford's and Audrey's relationship and their behaviour, e.g. their sexual advances, drinking and plotting.

Memorable Quotes

Layton: "Who are you? We need to get our train moving."
Ruth: "Greetings from Snowpiercer. Is Mr. Wilford aboard?"
Alexandra: "Mr. Wilford has already seized control of your engine. You have about 13 minutes to agree to a peaceful surrender before the cold overcomes and you all freeze to death."
Layton: "Tell him we need to see him face-to-face."
Ruth: "Please, yes, and that we welcome him aboard."
Alexandra: "Is Melanie Cavill alive?"
Ruth: "Yes. Yes, she is."
Layton: "Who are you?"
Alexandra: "My name is Alexandra Cavill. Where is my mother?"
―  Alex shows up after Big Alice breached Snowpiercer in 994 Cars Long.
Alex: "Leave once, it’s a decision. Then you leave me twice, and then that becomes a choice."
Melanie: "Yes, I’m choosing to go. But only because there’s not much chance of a world for you if I don’t."
Alex: "Okay, so… what do you wanna know?"
Melanie: "Everything. What do you love to do? Who pierced your ears? Where you sleep? Will you ever laugh?"
―  Melanie told Alex she loves her but she had to go in A Great Odyssey.
Melanie: "It’s a nice bunk."
Alex: "We get to decorate then, but they’re all the same. Except for Wilford’s."
Melanie: "Well, you made it nice. [Looks at the cotton ropes on the wall.]
Alex: "I use this to visualize our route."
Melanie: "Yeah. Me, too. Same trick."
Alex: "Well, we did have the same teacher. [Picks up a paper] I used to draw you… to picture what you looked like. [Gives it to Melanie.]
Melanie: "I pictured your face too, all the time."
Alex: "Wilford says you’re the best driver he’s ever seen."
―  Alex shows Melanie her bunk in A Great Odyssey.
Melanie: "Um… I may or may not have put a lot of socks in there. There’s a first aid kit, and my jacket. You probably don’t want it, but it’s the one I survived in."
Alex: "I love you [both sobbing] I have to go. (…) I don’t remember what the Earth is like and I, I wanna find out."
Melanie: "It’s your choice. I’m just so happy that you’re here now."
Alex: "Mom."
Melanie: "Yeah?"
Alex: "The train is falling apart. The track is deteriorating."
Melanie: "You know you don’t have to worry about me, huh? I’m gonna be okay. And you will too. I love you."
Alex: "I love you too."
Melanie: "I love you so much. I’m so proud of you. I’m so sorry I’m so sorry for all the things that I did, I’m so sorry for—"
Alex: "It’s okay. It’s okay."
Melanie: "Okay. Okay. [Both chuckles]."
―  Melanie packing things for Alex when she was going to leave Snowpiercer in The Original Sinners.

Trivia

  • She has spoken the opening dialogue in Into the White and Bound by One Track.
  • She held an elevated position aboard Big Alice, which could have been compared to the position held by Bennett Knox under Melanie.
  • Alex displays some of the same habits as her mother: after being showed how to, she often feels the vibrations of the train. In addition, as noted by LJ Folger, she uses the same trick of calling the Engine and pretending to get the answers that she wants to trick those around her.
  • In a confrontation in Into the White, Wilford claims he only took Alex with him on Big Alice, to use as a weapon against her mother Melanie Cavill, when they eventually would catch up with Snowpiercer again. However, he does appear to have some genuine care for her as seen in Bound by One Track.
  • According to Wilford in A Beacon for Us All, Alex's skills as an engineer could eclipse both Wilford and Melanie.
  • Despite hating Wilford, she feels that both him and Melanie taught her unique valuable things.
