History

Background

Throughout The Series

In First, the Weather Changed, when the gate opens and Jackboots bring the protein bars to the Tail, Santiago swears to Jackboot Trotter, tries to attack him, gets abused and falls to the floor.

In These Are His Revolutions, he joins Layton's group in the revolution. He was a front line fighter in the Night Car Ambush. He witnessed Patterson's death.

In The Train Demanded Blood, it is revealed that he is one of the captured prisoners along with Mr. Riggs and recognizes Melanie Cavill as the one that Layton told them about. Melanie hands Santiago a handkerchief for his bloody head and tells him that there is an ocean up front when he asks about it, something that Santiago admits to having always wanted to see and protests the execution of Walter Flemming. Initially hostile towards Melanie, Santiago promises to pray for her when she is taken to be executed.

As Layton prepares to detach seven cars, he realizes that the prisoners are in the last car uptrain and rushes to try to rescue them. However, Layton can't find the keys and is forced to abandon them to die with the Folgers and their army. As the detached section heads off down the Fremont Junction, Santiago and Mr. Riggs embrace each other as they await their fate, celebrating the revolution in their last moments.

Trivia

  • He can speak Spanish.
  • When Snowpiercer was brought to a stop and Alexandra Cavill boarded, she told Snowpiercer they have 13 minutes to surrender before the cold overcomes and they all freeze to death. Which means Santiago, Mr. Riggs, Clay, Gabby and the 31 prisoners, in the 7 separated cars, froze to death in 13 minutes after separation. Most of the power in the Utility Cars was drained out before separation.
