The Docking Car is a purpose-made, one of a kind car intended for the head of secondary supply train Big Alice. During the episode The Time of Two Engines Joseph Wilford ordered Alex Cavill to disconnect the Big Alice, fully intending for the Snowpiercer to freeze to death. This plan was however foiled by Melanie Cavill who placed plastic explosives on the connecting mechanism. Following the separation, the explosives exploded and made it impossible for Big Alice to separate from Snowpiercer ever again[1].
Technology
The docking car is designed to connect with the docking car of the primary Engine Eternal Snowpiercer. Big Alice uses six "grapples" to attach itself onto the Snowpiercer's docking car's hull.[1] A tunnel then expands and connects with a door at the end of Snowpiercer's Docking Car. Hydraulic systems allow Big Alice's Docking Car to open and close this door at will, while Snowpiercer lacks an apparent means of opening the docking door. During Snowpiercers invasion of the Big Alice, Strong Boy had to hold the car open as for it to not close on invading force, suggesting that triggering an alarm automatically closes the door. As of the episode, A Great Odyssey telephone line exists between Snowpiercer and Big Alice. How is this achieved with the door closed is not explained.
