Protein Bars are rectangular bars of sustenance commonly used as food throughout the Tail of Snowpiercer; the bars are commonly rationed in an effort to make them last. The bars are delivered to the Tail by Brakemen,^[1] but Tailies are free to use them as they please; including stockpiling.

Little is known about their history, other than at some point, the Tail began stockpiling protein bars as a fail-safe in the event that those up train cut of their supplies. They later began rationing the bars when their supply was cut numerous times over the years.

Big Alice also has Protein Bars, which is fed to workers of the Compost.
It's unknown if they are made the same way as the ones from the film. However, Astrid called them bug bars in Trouble Comes Sideways.
Astrid sent messages to the Tail using Protein Bars, like Wilford in the film.
