Until we know that for sure, they are considered dead. It just doesn't make sense either that they would've been picked up: if Big Alice was close enough for that, they would've detected the other train much earlier. I think they said that without power, they have about 15 minutes before freezing to death. Alexandra said something like that anyway when demanding ''Snowpiercer's'' surrender in the season finale. It seems incredibly unlikely that Big Alice was close enough to reach the detached cars in that short amount of time given the fact that it wasn't detected until they were closer to Chicago. Which begs the question of how come they didn't detect the train on other occasions but maybe it never really left the Chicago area before???
