===Connection with Alex=== Melanie is surprised when she finds out that her daughter, Alex, is alive and Wilford's closest ally and engineer β a position which she previously held. Melanie finds it difficult connecting with Alex after all the years they spent apart, given Alex is resentful of Melanie for leaving her and their family behind. Melanie eventually gets a chance to talk with Alex and explains about life outside of Snowpiercer and Big Alice. Melanie tells Alex that she sent a search party out for her and their grandparents, to which Alex informs her that they wanted to die at home. Tensions rise between the two when Alex asks Melanie about the snow sample she collected, with Alex not believing Melanie when she explains that she was just curious.<ref name="twoengines" />
